+ Dominiques's Story

Per Dominique: "A patient arrived at the pharmacy for his 2nd Covid-19 vaccine. While questioning the patient it was revealed that they were presented to the ER 24 hours after his first vaccine with TIA (Transient ischemic attack) symptoms and had a history of stroke. We then tried to contact the ER provider to no avail so we then decided to try the portal. We were able to see his history on the portal and we also contacted his PCP to determine whether the patient should proceed with the second dose. After discussing the case with his PCP it was determined to give the patient the vaccine. Having the right information, at the right time through BSCC’s HIE can help MT providers avert risk and potentially prevent catastrophic results".

Dominique’s experience is just one of many success stories that can be realized by using the statewide HIE.

+ Dr. Arbogast's Story

Dr. Arbogast has experienced firsthand just how important the BSCC HIE is to the providers and patients in Montana:

Per Dr. Arbogast: "August 2021, a 53 year old patient presented at SCL Health Medical Group in Red Lodge with Dyspnea. That same day, the patient showed up to Beartooth Billings Clinic Emergency Room with Covid-19. Within the next two weeks, the patient was at St. Vincent Health Care with Respiratory Failure. In early September, he was moved to Advanced Care Hospital of Montana after having a seizure. Dr. Arbogast was brought in to complete a seizure consult. Dr. Arbogast reviewed the D/C summary in SCL. After logging into SCL Health EPIC, he then logged into Billings Clinic Cerner searching for patient information that would explain more about this patient. Finally, Dr. Arbogast logged into the BSCC HIE. The BSCC HIE medication history report showed that the patient had been on Keppra, prescribed through a Riverstone provider, which is a seizure prescription. He called to start the prescription again, the medication was restarted, and the seizures were controlled. Because of the HIE, there was no need for aggressive further workup".

BSCC can bring together every healthcare community across the State to ensure that critical patient information follows the patient when and where it is needed most.
