A Pharmacy Partner Guide for Connecting to BSCC

In collaboration with the Montana Department of Health & Human Services and Montana Medicaid, BSCC is launching a new initiative to improve patient medication histories across Montana. We are requesting your pharmacy’s participation in this important effort to enhance care coordination, patient safety, and public health outcomes for all Montanans.

By sharing timely, all-medication dispense data through BSCC, providers gain a more complete view into a patient’s medical history. This empowers them to make better informed clinical decisions, reduce preventable adverse drug events, and improve continuity of care for patients statewide.

How to Connect

Please note that this submission process is separate and distinct from the mandatory reporting of controlled substance data to the Montana Prescription Drug Registry (MPDR)

Technical Specifications

  • Data must be submitted using the ASAP 4.2a file specification

  • Pharmacies are requested to submit a file to BSCC on a daily basis

  • Pharmacies are encouraged begin the onboarding process with BSCC as soon as possible. A formal start date for reporting will be announced with ample time for implementation and testing

Options for Joining BSCC

Pharmacies can join BSCC as a data contributor or a partner. Data contributors provide medication data through RxGov. Partners also contribute data, but gain access to BSCC’s clinical viewer and the full suite of services offered through the HIE. See below for more details.

  • Pharmacies may participate as a data contributor by submitting medication dispensing data directly into RxGov.

    This option allows pharmacies to:

    • Upload required medication data to the repository

    • Support statewide medication visibility and reporting initiatives

    • Meet applicable data sharing or regulatory requirements

Data contributors do not receive access to the HIE clinical viewer or additional HIE services.

To sign up as a data contributor, please email pharmacy@mtbscc.org

  • Pharmacies may choose to both contribute data and become a full HIE participant.

In addition to submitting medication data to RxGov, full participants gain access to the BSCC’s comprehensive suite of services, including:

    • Clinical Viewer access for patient-level health information

    • Real-time health data exchange with hospitals, clinics, and providers

    • Care coordination tools and alerts

    • Additional population health and analytics services (as applicable)

This option enables pharmacies to not only support the medication repository, but also actively participate in the broader care continuum.
